WHAT IS THE QUEER ARTS INITIATIVE
As an organization, the Upstate SC LGBT+ Chamber made a strategic decision in January 2023 to expand the Chamber’s support of the Queer artistic community in Greenville, SC. To that end, the Chamber has formulated the Queer Arts Initiative. This initiative's purpose is to inform, support, and promote the queer creative community, including artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs, to further their visibility and accessibility within the Upstate.
For its inaugural program under the Queer Arts Initiative, The LGBT+ Chamber has selected to partner with the gallery space located at Modal, a queer-owned and operated hostel & coffee shop in the heart of Greenville’s sprawling downtown scene. The gallery & coffee shop serve as a local hub for special events to showcase the work of queer painters, photographers, musicians, performers, and many more. While Greenville boasts a thriving arts community, with nodes of artistic communities, there lacks inclusion and promotion of queer art. The Chamber is committed to celebrating diversity, in all its forms, in every industry. With this new focus and strategic vision on the arts community, The Chamber is proud to partner with Modal, who, in just two years of operation has hosted over 20 artists in their gallery 65% of whom are queer.
The Upstate SC LGBT+ Chamber’s Queer Arts Initiative has taken over the expenses of management, curation, production, and promotion of the gallery at Modal (813 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC 29605) effective January 1, 2023. The LGBT+ Chamber Queer Arts Initiative will be utilizing this space to highlight and emphasize diversity through a series of queer exhibits in 2023-24
